Best Coast

I can't believe it's been almost two years since first I found Best Coast, and then we had them back again last year with that great Drew Barrymore video.

So I guess it's time for an annual appearance.

Their recent album is a little gem, if you don't already have "The Only Place" why not?

The Only Place David Letterman 5-16-12 - I guess there are some uses for Letterman after all.

Why I Cry L.A.'s Best Coast perform "Why I Cry" for the 1st time at the 35 Denton Music Festival as rains in Downtown Denton Tx. Why I Cry is set to appear on the band's sophomore LP "The Only Place" due May 15th on Mexican Summer.
Documented by Evan Henry for Dallas Distortion Music.

How They Want Me To Be Best Coast at the Slowdown in Omaha, Neb., May 29, 2012.

I really like this little video, even though it is only one minute.

Si Cranstoun

Wow! Check out Si Cranstoun. This guy takes me straight back to my teen years in the late 50's. If I closed my eyes and listened to these videos it transports me to the cafe with the juke box on the corner of Dewberry Street and Abbott Road back there in Poplar all those years ago. Where we made an art of making a soda and a bag of chrisps last all night so we could save our money for the juke box.

Ok, so why music ? to be utterly was because when I was around four years old one excitable Christmas day someone had been bought an Elvis Presley album and Jailhouse Rock was playing...
So I left up and started jumping around with all the energy I had...and everyone in the lounge started clapping and cheering me on!
It felt amazing ...I was dancing ..I was free and the grown ups were cheering for me while I did it !
Every oppurtunity since then I have got up to dance and singing and performing music was and still is something along the way.
Si Cranstoun

Si just oozes the fifties and his enthuiiasm is contagious.
Can't wait to track down some of his albums.  Meantime kick back and really enjoy this terrific music.

This first one is a great video, by the way.

The Flamin' Mamies

While doing those two earlier female band posts I came across The Flamin' Mamies and was so impressed I decided they really needed a complete post.

The Flamin' Mamies are a 5 piece, all-girl jazz string band who hail from Liverpool in the UK. They have been playing together for just over 2 years and they were mostly beginners when they started.
Their line up is:
Lil' Mamie Brown - Vocals and Guitar
Kirsty Walker - Double Bass
Mandy 'Banjo' Bailey - Banjo and vocals / scat sounds
Chantilly Lace - Ukulele and vocals / scat sounds
Cress the Goddess - Washboard and Percussion

Ahhh, those Flamin’ Mamies. The toe tappin’ deco dames from the jazz age! Syncopated rag time rhythms and old time hokum sauce, hotter than a gilded pistol!
From their poundin’ big bass fiddle, to their blue vampin’ guitar. Fiery four string flailin’ banjo and a ukulele so hot it needs cooling with a fan stroke! These gals burn ‘em down with searin’ scat vocals that’ll melt the wax clean off your old victrola! So
So set your phonographs to 78, roll back the carpets, shine up your fanciest dancin’ shoes and let these hot stompin’ first ladies of North western swing buck n’ wing you back across that old hard wood dance floor…

When I get low I get high! A music video for a Liverpool based all girl Jazz band (the Flamin' Mamies) made in four days from start to finish as part of Liverpool Kino Cabaret, by Digital Production by Disabled People
Directed by Max Zadow
Art Direction by Jessica Prince
Camera and Editing by Daniel Davies (system-x)

Shimmy Like My Sister Kate Shimmy!! This is the Flamin' Mamies version of the 1915 song 'I Wish I could Shimmy like my Sister Kate' (written by Clarence Williams and Armand Piron). This song is a bit of a work in progress but they thought they would still share it with us anyway!
Their lyrics have been gathered from many different versions of the song.

If You're A Viper This song was written by Stuff Smith and first recorded by Smith with his Onyx Club Boys in 1936.

Not to be confused with the Fats Waller classic
The Viper Drag The Flamin' Mamies playing in the Free Rock & Roll gig in The Cellar Club at Threshold Festival

Finally today a true Western Swing classic.
Cow Cow Boogie Yee-Haaa! This country-boogie song was written for the film Ride Em Cowboy (1942) and first recorded by Ella Mae Morse, and shortly afterwards by Ella Fitzgerald with the Inkspots.
The music was written by Don Raye and the lyrics by Benny Carter and Gene De Paul.

Sometimes you just know

Back on March 8, 2012 I declared the winner of the 2012 Eurovision contest.
And I'm glad to say the judges saw it my way.

My only reservation at the time was that the song was really too good for Eurovision.
But I guess they finally picked a really good song,

A good song is worth a repeat appearance, so here's the second semi final performance from a couple of days ago.

Yay! now they have the final version from tonight posted.

All Girl Bands - Back in the day

About six days ago I posted a piece on Zepparella the all female Led Zeppelin cover band. Which got me to thinking about other all female bands.
Now if you use that as a search code via YouTube you would be amazed and impressed as to what you would find.
So I figured to do a post or two about all female bands.
So today we start with a bunch of bands from the 20's through the early 50's.

One I remember personally from when I was a kid, they used to put them on the radio, and very early TV back in England. Ivy Benson was a big favorite.

Ivy Benson And Her All Girl Orchestra

Thelma White and Her All Girl Orchestra During the 1940's there were several all girl jazz bands touring- the men up to the mid-40's were being drafted. Pretty hot show.

The Ingenues - Band Beautiful (1928) Here's a crazy little clip of the all girl orchestra The Ingenues. Try to spot all the 1928 hit songs. Whatever happened to this kind of entertainment. Gee!

Another from back in the day
The Jeanette Hackett Girls and the Swing Sirens

Ada Leonard's All-American Girls

Rita Rio : My Margarita

Of course none of the stills are of the ladies in the bands, just selected beautiful actresses of the period.  How many did you recognize?

Michelle Lewis

The most quoted quote I have seen about Michelle Lewis is "Like pie for your ears", and this is so true. Michelle has a unique voice, and it is beautifully fitted for the style of Americana she performs.

Michelle Lewis is one of the bevy of young artists who perform house concerts, among other gigs, to spread the word of their talent to the masses.
You can set up a house concert for yourself with Michelle right here.

Camille and Kennerly

Identical twins Camille and Kennerly Kitt are multi-talented professional duet harpists and actresses. Known as the “Harp Twins”, Camille and Kennerly perform internationally as a dynamic acoustic and electric rock/pop/contemporary Harp Duo.
Their remarkable talent is now catching the eye of Hollywood producers. Camille and Kennerly appear in three feature films in 2012 and 2011 - two of which also feature the twins performing on their harps.
Being a big Game of Thrones fan, Peter Dinklage is a scene stealing mofo. Just hope they don't kill him off like they did the previous star.
As I was saying being a Game of Thrones fan was how I stumbled across this beautiful and talented duo. Just amazing.

Check out their tunes. They have performed some beautiful covers on their harps, turning them into tunes they own.
Game of Thrones Theme

Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns n Roses cover

Dream On - Aerosmith Cover

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin Cover

Disturbia - Rihanna Cover

Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd Cover

As the world's only known identical twin professional harpists, Camille and Kennerly have a passion and flair for arranging and performing contemporary music for Harp Duet. The Harp Twins perform on identical statuesque 6ft 3in (1.9m) Concert Grand Harps as well as identical modern ebony Electric Harps.
The twins were trained classically but their true musical love and passion is playing rock, pop, metal, hip-hop, country, alternative, and crossover genres. Camille and Kennerly are known for their remarkable duet harp arrangements of songs by artists such as Lady Gaga, Guns N’ Roses, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd, U2, Journey, Taylor Swift, The Cranberries, Rihanna, Coldplay, The Beatles, Britney Spears, Enya, Johnny Cash, OutKast, P!nk, Deep Purple, The Smiths, Elton John, Joy Division, and many more.
The twins also arrange and perform a jukebox of Broadway, Video Game, TV and Movie Soundtrack hits. In addition to being prolific arrangers, Camille and Kennerly compose and perform their own original pieces for Harp Duet.
