Hey Marseilles

Hey Marseilles is an ode to freedom, a tale of courage, and a fleeting feeling. Mournful strings, joyous guitars, and an alternate choir of eclectic instruments join forces to support a myriad of vocal melodies embodied by poetic verse. Words of wisdom, yarns of folly, or tomes of truth— no one is certain— but Hey Marseilles is sure to be resonating between your ears long after the dulcet tones of the accordion and cello fade away.

Hey Marseilles formed in the summer of 2006 after Nick and Philip forced Matt Bishop to write a song to an accordion riff and play it live for a work party downtown. The current lineup consists of seven members performing on guitars, cello, viola, accordion, piano, bass, glockenspiel, ukulele, mandolin, drums, and a plethora of rhythmic accessories. The music can be described as indie-folk, and has been compared to that of The Decemberists, Devotchka, and Bright Eyes.

Music by Hey Marseilles
Video dreamed up and directed by Hayley Young

The simple set for the video for 'Rio' subtly captures the spirit of Hey Marseilles' dirge about traveling onwards. Staged in an airplane hanger in a suburb of Seattle, Wash. -- and filmed in one shot -- the video conveys a sense of motion while its subjects, the band members, stay relatively in place. As the action unfolds, some of the song's more metaphorical interpretations are hinted at.

"The video embodies 'Rio's' underlying themes: that the world should be explored to its fullest, every moment serves to set up the next and cool things can be accomplished in concert with friends," frontman Matt Bishop tells Spinner. "We were humbled by Hayley Young's creative vision and the dedication of a cast willing to trade their deep talents for a day of rollerblading, ping-pong and Frisbee." -- Benjy Eisen @

Glastonbury Dance Summit

Kylie Minogue takes the stage to perform with Scissor Sisters at this years Glastonbury Festival.
Nothing else to say.

Any Which Way

Here is the "gossip" on the why's and wherefore's on the pairing.

Ernest Ellis

Ernest Ellis is an Indie band from New South Wales, Australia,
The band is made up of:
Ernest Ellis - vocals, guitar
Keita Tarlinton - keys, vocals
Ben Morgan - bass, vocals
Mat Gardner - drums, vocals

Ernest Ellis draws a lot of inspiration from the beat poet who took the famous pancake tour of America, Jack Kerouac. That sense of exploration and adventure, and the waywardness of the characters permeates its way through both his music and lyricism.

“That book is probably my favourite book and I love how all over the place it is. I read that book because it was Bob Dylan’s favourite book and he was a big influence on me and my songwriting. The element of travel and discovery really appealed to me.”

Gypsy Jazz Caravan

Some more Django style jazz today, maybe to celebrate the expected Brazil victory.
The Gypsy Jazz Caravan are from New York city but the sound is pure Paris.
Why is the combination of Guitar, Violin and Bass so very evocative.
Django's gone but never forgotten, so many modern day interpreters.

Gypsy Jazz Caravan at The Garage, NYC, April 10, 2010.

I'll See You in My Dreams

And finally today we see them at the Jalopy Theater with a special guest Carolin Pook last October.

Gypsy Jazz Caravan is a New York City based acoustic ensemble that plays Hot Jazz inspired by the music of legendary French Gypsy guitarist, Django Reinhardt, and jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli. Gypsy Jazz Caravan’s extensive repertoire includes swing standards, ballads, bossa novas, tangos, waltzes and a growing number of original compositions. The lineup includes: NY veteran guitarist, Marc Daine, who has recorded for RCA records and toured with the Broadway show, “Big River”; virtuoso violinist, Rob Thomas, who JazzTimes calls "a violinist of exceptional creative resources... riveting as a solo voice with a rich complex tone that can sing or shriek"; bassist, Mike Weatherly, who has performed for President Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, and Pope John Paul II and top NY Gypsy Swing rhythm guitarist, Glenn Tosto.

Rosenberg Trio

Some truly great Jazz Manouche from the wonderful Rosenberg Trio from the Netherlands.
Maybe a celebration of their countries progression in the World Cup.
Just take a listen to "For Sephora" and see if you aren't smiling and tapping your feet by the end of it.

For Sephora

Next check out their take on the jazz standard composed by Juan Tizol and first performed by Duke Ellington in 1937.

The Rosenberg Trio ripping through Caravan....Stochelo's tears this one up, as usual. Enjoy!

And finally today a classic from the master, Django!

May 29, 2009 at the "Musiques Métisses" festival in Angoulême. Stochelo plays with a combination-mix of the onstage Mic and his Stimer, he didn't like the sound too much, but I think it's exquisitely Djangoesque when he attacks a little [Mario Maccaferri]

The Rosenberg Trio are two guitarists and one bassist—Stochelo Rosenberg (soloist), Nous'che Rosenberg (rhythm guitar) and Nonnie Rosenberg (double bass) from The Netherlands. Their inspiration is Django Reinhardt, the legendary gypsy guitarist of the 1930s. The Rosenberg Trio's genre has been characterized as Jazz Manouche (Gypsy Swing).
The group's first album was Seresta in 1989. Notable events include the release in 2010 of Djangologists a DVD featuring a recording tribute to Django Reinhardt, and the 1992 live album The Rosenberg Trio: Live at the North Sea Jazz Festival, which captured the trio at an eclectic, youthful highpoint.
There is no exact date before 1989 when the Rosenberg Trio began playing under that name. Two of the Rosenbergs, Nous'che and Nonnie, are sons of Sani Rosenberg, a musician in the Dutch Gypsy community. Having been raised in a very musical family, they all were influenced by the music of Django Reinhardt.
Nous'che started playing with his cousin and buddy, Stochelo Rosenberg, when Stochelo was about 10 years old. [Wikipedia]

The Rumours

The Rumours are true. True indie rock n roll that is. They hail from Melbourne, Australia.
Give them a listen.

Pretty Pretty

Like a cat on a hot tin roof

The Rumours are immediately catchy yet defy genre definition, describing themselves as jaded romantics, The Rumours create tales of despairing desire and unrequited love. More accurately, their music reflects a broken hearted optimism riding on soulful pop melodies and influences as diverse as Burt Bacharach, Neil Young and the Turtles. With a thin wild soulsonic sound, the band takes us back to the glory days of the indie pop.

In Australia, their growing fanbase has earnt the band many an enviable support show with both international and local acts such as The Shins, Neon, End of Fashion, Evermore, and Dallas Crane. Their inspired debut We Are Happy could easily be described as a break up record, an album rich with the many subtleties of the broken heart. Yet the title is not a throwaway irony. We Are Happy is the perfect paradox that loss awakens the soul to really feel joy. It is a title that befits both this astounding album and this somewhat infamous band.

" We Are Happy -- catchy, well-written pop tunes... The album is an assured collection of songs that display a thorough knowledge of rock's past, from the aforementioned Smiths and Wilco to the Beatles and New Order... they do know how to write infectious melodies and classic guitar parts. What's more, they know their Marr and Tweedy, McCartney and Sumner. Put three skilled musicians with superb taste in music together in a band, and you've got the beginnings of something great. Here's betting the second Rumours' album is nothing short of genius; for now, we've got a damn good promise. " Michael Franco, July 2005, (U.S)

Wake Up

Hooverphonic are a Belgian rock/pop group, formed in 1995. Though early on categorized as a trip hop group, they quickly expanded their sound to the point where they could no longer be described as a lone genre, but rather encompass alternative, electronica, electropop, rock, and mixture of others. The band originally called themselves Hoover, but later changed their name to Hooverphonic after discovering other groups were already using the Hoover name and to avoid any legal issues with the vacuum cleaner company.
On 10 October 2008, Geike Arnaert, the lead singer of the band, announced she would leave the group by the end of the year to pursue her solo career. Arnaert had been working on solo material for a few months. The last concert of Hooverphonic with Geike happened on 13 December 2008 in Tele-Club, Ekaterinburg, Russia. It was filmed by the local MTV station and has been shown on Russian TV in 2009.
Hooverphonic have said that they are currently searching for a new singer. Auditions were held through their website but it is not known whether a new singer has been selected. [Wikipedia]

Moloko (pronounced /məˈloʊkoʊ/) was an Anglo-Irish electronic/pop duo consisting of Róisín Murphy from Wicklow, Ireland and Mark Brydon, from Sunderland, England.
The band's name originates from the Nadsat slang in the novel A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, in which it means "milk" (from the Russian word for milk, молоко), actually the name of a milk drink that Alex and his "droogs" consume mixed with "drencrom". (Fellow electronic Sheffield band Heaven 17 had also taken their name from the novella when they formed in 1980).

Gotta love the Clockwork Orange reference.

Martina Topley Bird

The Trip Hop safari continues.  Martina Topley Bird is another great voice from the UK.   Very very smooth.

Taken from her debut solo album "Quixotic", which the critics described as "a collection of songs that stand up as timeless classics, all pinned together by that voice" ID, and "Utterly unlike anything that's out there at the moment, absolutely sublime" Observer

Baby Blue

one of the UK's finest voices acoustic backstage at Glastonbury's stone circle exclusively for Telegraph TV.

Martina Topley-Bird (born 7 May 1975) is a British vocalist who first gained fame as the featured female vocalist on trip hop pioneer Tricky's debut album Maxinquaye (a printing error credited her as "Martine"). She worked with him on his follow-up albums and, in 2003, released her own solo album Quixotic.
It was while she was a young precocious teenager at the school that she met trip hop pioneer Tricky, who she worked with on his first album Maxinquaye.[2] She continued her collaboration with Tricky on his follow-up albums Nearly God, Pre-Millennium Tension and Angels with Dirty Faces.
Following a falling-out of their professional and personal relationship in 1998, she began pursuing a solo career. It was not until 2003 that she released her debut album, Quixotic (Independiente Records), mainly produced by Topley-Bird and production team AMP9 (Alex McGowan, Steve Crittall, Nick Bird) at Space Eko Recording Studios London. Upon its release, it received positive reviews from critics and was a finalist for the 2003 Mercury Music Prize. The song "Sandpaper Kisses" from the album was featured in the video game, Fahrenheit (released in North America as Indigo Prophecy).
The album finally saw a release, of sorts, in the United States in July 2004 when the Palm Pictures label released a re-designed and re-sequenced version with a new title (Anything), a trimmed-down tracklisting and all-new cover art.
The following year she appeared on the Starbucks compilation album, Sweetheart 2005: Love Songs, which features contemporary musicians covering classic love songs. She sang "I Only Have Eyes for You", a song originally by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Al Dubin.
Her second solo album, The Blue God, was released in May 2008. The track "Carnies" was released as the first single on 3 March 2008 and reached No.20 on the UK Indie Charts. "Poison" was released as the second single and reached No.9 on the Indie Charts. [Wikipedia]

Kelli Ali

Back on the Trip Hop mood this morning, lets check out Kelli Ali. What were the Sneaker Pimps thinking?

Inferno High Love

Kelli Dayton, also known as Kelli Ali (a name she took to honour her father, Michael Ali), was born 30 June 1974[1] in Birmingham, England.
Ali is a female vocalist most recognized for being lead singer for the trip-hop group Sneaker Pimps, under the name Kelli Dayton. Though she was featured prominently in both the songs and the music videos for the album Becoming X (the group finding fame following the release of the hit single "6 Underground"), she was released from the group in 1998 when they decided to do vocals for their own songs. Before Sneaker Pimps, Kelli was originally part of a group called Psycho Drama before joining the Lumieres (as their songwriter, singer, and lead guitarist) a few years later. The Lumieres only had one major single, "Cinder Hearts".
Under the name Kelli Ali, she moved on to a solo career, starting with Tigermouth in 2003. With this album, she moved from trip-hop to a more dreampop sound. The album featured hits such as "Sunlight in the Rain" and "Kids," which featured ex-Doors drummer John Densmore. She toured alongside Garbage in 2003 and released a follow-up album, Psychic Cat, in mid-2004. The second album was more of a return to Ali's rock and roll roots, and featured musician-turned-author Tony O'Neill on keyboards.
In April 2006, she travelled to Japan to record and write tracks with Hoshino Hidehiko from Buck-Tick and Cube Juice for the band Dropz. The same year, producer Paul Oakenfold recorded the Kelli Ali penned song "Faster Kill Pussycat" with actress Brittany Murphy, which remained Murphy's only single release.
On 24 November 2008, Ali released Rocking Horse, her third solo album. The new album has a more acoustic tone than previous releases. The album was produced by Max Richter (Fat Cat records) in Glasgow and Edinburgh in the first half of 2008.

Remember Roxette? Well they made a cool appearance on the Swedish Royal Wedding eve party for Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden & Mr. Daniel Westling. And guess what, they were just as good as ever. So here is that performance, plus some others over the years.

And again, not so 80's live in Barcelona in 2001

It Must Have Been Love

Big comeback of the legendary Swedish pop duo ROXETTE! The first time for 7 years on stage together again, after a longer break because of Marie's illness. Roxette prepared a big surprise for their fans, perfoming 42 shows at the Night Of The Proms in Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany.

Roxette is a Swedish pop music duo, consisting of Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle. They enjoyed worldwide success from the late 1980s until the mid-1990s, gaining nineteen UK Top 40 hits and four US #1 singles with, "The Look", "Listen to Your Heart", "It Must Have Been Love" and "Joyride". Two further singles "Dangerous" and "Fading Like a Flower" hit #2.
After a hiatus in the mid-1990s, their popularity continued in other territories such as Europe and South America, where they earned various Gold and Platinum awards until the beginning of the new millennium. The duo took an extended hiatus from recording and touring, when in 2002, Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Roxette took to the stage together again for the first time in 8 years, in 2009, during Gessle's European Party Crasher tour.
Their songs continue to receive radio airplay. "It Must Have Been Love" and "Listen to Your Heart" have both recently received awards from BMI, with both songs achieving four million radio plays. They have sold an estimated 45 million albums and 25 million singles worldwide with over 3.5 million record sales in the United States, achieving platinum for Joyride and Look Sharp! there. Ely Guerra

Some more Trip Hop music today? Or is this straight Latin pop? I have seen Ely Guerra put into both camps, but to me it sounds more Trip Hop. Maybe Latin Trip Hop?  A lady of many styles.

Trip hop is a music genre that refers to a musical trend that began in the mid-1990s of downtempo electronic music and grew out of England's hip hop and house scenes, including the Bristol underground scene. It has been described as "Europe's alternative of choice in the second half of the '90s", and a one-up fusion "of Hip-Hop and Electronica until neither genre is recognizable." It is thus categorized as a fairly experimental genre, and sometimes with elements of Dance.

Yo no

From her album Lotofire

Control Machete

The daughter of Alberto Guerra and Gloria Vázquez, Ely lived the first few years of her life in Monterrey, where she was born, before moving to San Luis Potosí and then to Guadalajara, due to her father’s work. It was in Guadalajara where she first discovered her passion for music. At the age of fifteen, the young Ely Guerra decided to follow her dreams and look for opportunities in Mexico City. It was there that she received a contract with BMG. Two years later, she released her first self-titled album “Ely Guerra” and made her professional debut as a singer in 1992. However, the album did not have much success.

Ely Guerra later left BMG and signed a contract with another record label. With EMI, she released “Pa’ Morirse de Amor” in 1997, along with the hit single “Angel de Fuego”, and “Lotofire” in 1999, which was edited in the United States by Higer Octave. She also released the LP “4” in Argentina and Chile, which contained a compilation of the albums “Pa’ Morirse de Amor” and “Lotofire”, as well as her most recent production, titled “Sweet & Sour, Hot y Spicy” released in 2004.

Throughout her successful career, Ely Guerra has collaborated with artists such as: José Fors, Fratta, La Ley, Quem, among others, and has also participated in the soundtracks for the films Amores perros, De la calle, and Vacas vaqueras. In addition, her picture next to Julieta Venegas appeared on the cover of Time magazine, introducing them as the most promising performers in the Mexican rock scene. Her latest album “Sweet & Sour, Hot y Spicy”, released in 2004, contained the hit singles “Ojos Claros, Labios Rosas” and “Quiéreme Mucho.”

Elan es una chica que se mueve tanto en el mainstream como en lo más indie del rock Mexicano.

Elan Sara DeFan (born March 1, 1983 in Guadalajara, Mexico) is a recording artist, known for being one of the first Latin American female songwriters to begin her career with an English language album written completely on her own and the first independent artist from Latin America to have sold more than 1.7 millions copies of her music with her band which is also named Elan , made up of Elan, lead vocalist and keyboard player, Jan Carlo DeFan, lead guitarist, co-producer and Elan 's brother, childhood friend and bass player Carlos Padilla Maqueo, and younger cousin and drummer Michel "Cheech" Bitar DeFan.
Elán reveals an assortment of music that has been influenced by many artists like Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Melissa Etheridge, Bonnie Raitt, and a few other notable influences. Elán had a notable success with albums like Street Child and London Express. So far, she released six albums: five in English and one in Spanish.

So why have I not heard of her here in California? This is one talented young lady.
I am really digging her music. Very cool.

This Fools Life

Sólrún Sumarliðadóttir, Maria Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir, Edda Rún Ólafsdóttir and Hildur Ársælsdóttir, four Icelandic women in their mid twenties collectively known as Amiina first decided they wanted to write music together in 2004. They gathered together every last instrument they could find and piled them into their car. They then filled every available bit of space with food. This, they maintain, was a very, very important part of the process. But it was also very nearly the act that prevented the birth of Amiina. Their overloaded car was unable to struggle up the steep mountainous incline to the studio they had chosen, and had a local farmer not towed them to their destination with his tractor amiina might never have come to be. KURR the bands debut album, named after the sound that birds are said to make in Iceland makes it clear that they have not learnt their lesson from this experience. Amiina are the kind of band about whom it could be said, almost literally, that they employ pretty much everything but the kitchen sink. And though it's true that they started with individually defined roles as a string quartet this was never going to be how they would set about making a record of their own. In Amiina there are no specific assignments: no official bass player, drummer, guitarist or singer.

They just make pure blissful sounds that everybody can enjoy.

Ghostland Observatory

Ghostland Observatory is not a band, but an agreement between two friends to create something that not only heals their beat-driven hearts, but pleases their rock ‘n roll souls. Taking the working man’s approach, Ghostland Observatory spend countless hours in their south Austin studio. They have released two albums in less than a year, and have moved audiences from coast to coast with their live performances and unique style. Ghostland Observatory is the duo of front man Aaron Behrens and producer/drummer Thomas Turner. Behrens’ vocal style and stage performances are unique and uncompromising, and he has drawn early comparisons to Freddie Mercury and Prince. Turner is heavily influenced by electronic artists such as Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier and Green Velvet, as well as rockers such as The Animals, David Bowie, and The Clash. With their spectral blend of electronics, drums, guitar and vocals, they have emerged with a sound that is the culmination of past influence and present inspiration, and can only be described as BALLSY.

Everything but the kitchen sink music, and that is not a bad thing. I really like this.
I'm glad to see that the music scene around Austin is still so vibrant.  Austin my favorite city in Texas.
Why am I thinking about Rick Wakeman and not Billy Joel when I see this first clip?

Not the county in South East England, not even the University in Ohio that became famous because of the shootings in 1970.
No this Kent is from Sweden.
And these are some tracks from their summer album "En Plats I Solen". (A Place In The Sun).
It all sounds very summery.

This is their new single.
Gamla Ullevi

Not sure if this is a song about an old stadium.

Skisser för sommaren

And finally something from their previous album, from 2009 with an actual video

Ever faithful Wikipedia says:
Kent is a Swedish alternative rock band founded in Eskilstuna in 1990, with the name Coca-Cola Kids, later Jones & Giftet (Jones & the Poison), and Havsänglar (Angel sharks, literally Sea angels). The band's logo is distinctive, using a lowercase "k" and the ITC Avant Garde Gothic Book typeface.
The band has had several big Swedish radio hits since the breakthrough single "Kräm (så nära får ingen gå)", from their second studio album. They are one of the most popular rock groups in Sweden, and describes themselves as "Sweden's biggest rock band", but are more or less unknown outside Scandinavia. Kent shortly attempted an international career with English versions of the albums Isola and Hagnesta Hill with accompanying U.S. tours for the former, but they gave up after not reaching the breakthrough they had hoped for.
Kent has released 8 studio albums, sold over a million records and has won 20 Swedish Grammy Awards. "VinterNoll2" is also an unlockable track in Career Mode on Guitar Hero World Tour.
Two of the band's four members (Markus Mustonen and Sami Sirviö) are Swedish Finns.

If you are at all a fan of "downtempo" music you will really be digging this album and the group Atomica.
Their album ”Metropolitan” sounds somewhat somber without being depressing, not pretentious, and relaxing without being forgettable.
While the programming and musicianship is top-notch throughout the entire album, Lauren Cheatham is truly the main attraction for me. Her soft, beautiful voice fits the tone and mood of the songs perfectly. She has an amazing voice.

Howe Gelb & A Band of Gypsies

Howe Gelb is an American singer-songwriter, musician and record producer based in Tucson, Arizona. One of his earlier projects was Giant Sand. His latest project is Howe Gelb & A Band of Gypsies. And what a wonderful project it is. Some real cool rock/blues/gypsy sounds here.

I have to add, I have been playing the heck out of this.  This is one awesome album, if you don't have it hurry on down to the store and get it.  Howe has a wonderfully evocative voice.  Totaly awesome.   6-22-2010 Bear.

Uneven Light of a Day

"Following the hunch had lead me to here. more home then home. surrounded by the people who invented the guitar and playing it that way. here in cordoba for the past 3 years. up on a roof top in a converted pigeon coop, with the red record button pressed and dizzy from the joy." - Howe
song from "Alegrías" (eureka 2010)

Howe and the band live at SXSW

Here they are rehearsing for SXSW.

In case you are trying to place Howe and like me have a bad memory for names, like me, see if this jogs your memory.

From the album Por Vida; a tribute to Alejandro Escovedo,"She Towers Above," a music video directed by Michael Toubassi, offers a personal and intimate look into the life of Tucson's Alt-Country godfather, Howe Gelb.

Also could not resist this photo I found of Howe.  This has to be one real nice guy.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums is an experimental band from Sweden consisting of two members, Mariam Wallentin and her husband Andreas Werliin.
The band formed in 2006 when the members met while studying musical improvisation at the University of Gothenburg. The music mostly consists of only drums, various percussion and electronic samples, played by Andreas Werliin, and Mariam Wallentin's vocals. Mariam Wallentin also plays strings and Andreas Werliin provides additional vocals. Their musical experimentation has been compared with Björk.
The band released their first album Heartcore in 2007, and were awarded with Årets Jazz i Sverige, Swedish Jazz Act of the Year, and this gave them finances for the recording of their second album The Snake which came out in 2008.
The band got critical acclaim after their first album, and in the summer of 2008 they had their first USA-tour and played at several festivals in Europe. They have also been support for acts such as Deerhoof, Efterklang, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, and St. Vincent.
Currently, Wildbirds & Peacedrums have finished two vinyl EPs: Retina (released May 24) and Iris (released June 21). The two EPs will be later compiled into an album entitled Rivers set to be released in August 2010. [Wikipedia]

Kira Small

Kira Small does not have a small voice, she has a wonderful voice. Check out these videos of "Living Room Sessions", what an amazing concept. Wish I had a bigger house.
Why is this young lady not super famous? She is super fabulous.

Kira Small is an artist who has always been at home in many styles of music. Trying to choose just one placed limitations on her expression that were too binding so she threw up her hands and began to forge her own. Like many of her heroes - Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles - Kira has always aspired to transcend stylistic boundaries and just sing it however it needs to be sung.

Though she doesn’t sound like a white chick from Wisconsin, Kira grew up outside of Milwaukee listening to country and folk music, even going so far as to write a letter to Loretta Lynn asking for advice on how to become a country singer – she was about 9 then. Junior high brought pop and R&B into her ears and out of her mouth. It was, however, at Milwaukee’s High School of the Arts that Kira’s musical world was blown wide open when she left the ‘burbs and hit the city. She heard and sang in gospel choirs for the first time. She was encouraged to explore improvisation as a vocalist and pianist in several of MHSA’s award-winning jazz ensembles. She got her first Aretha Franklin record and hasn’t been the same since.

So great was her delight in this new musical world, she followed it to Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Kira became the first ever freshman member of its prestigious Vocal Jazz Ensemble, performed as a soloist in Berklee’s Country Ensemble, and sang in countless other soul and R&B revues and recitals.
