The Pineapple Thief

The Pineapple Thief is a progressive/indie rock band, the musical vision of Bruce Soord. Founder Bruce Soord (formerly with Vulgar Unicorn) started The Pineapple Thief (TPT) as an outlet for his music back in 1999. Bruce released the debut Abducting the Unicorn on Cyclops records - this created enough interest to convince Bruce that perhaps TPT was here to stay, quickly establishing a small but fanatical fan base. Bolstered by critical plaudits and support from fans, Bruce returned to the Dining Room studios to work on the second, and to many, the break through TPT album 137.
During this time, several major labels started to take an interest, causing a delay in the release which arrived over two years after the debut. However it was probably the third album, Variations on a Dream that gave TPT the boost they needed, reaching out to yet more people all over the world, by which point TPT were consistently the top sellers on their label, Cyclops
After this release in the spring of 2002 Bruce decided to form a band to take his music to the fans. The band consisted of his close musical friends - former university band mate Jon Sykes on bass, Wayne Higgins on guitars, Matt O'Leary on keyboards and Keith Harrison on drums. Matt has since left but Steve Kitch (who co-produced and mixed 10 Stories Down) has since joined to play the keyboards on stage.
The band were signed to Kscope, a division of Snapper Music in late 2007.

When Trent Reznor released the final Nine Inch Nails album The Slip, he made it a free download, announcing to the world, "This one's on me". Reznor has another project going now, How to Destroy Angels, a collaboration with wife Mariqueen Maandig. But Reznor is still giving away stuff for free.
On June 1, next Tuesday, How to Destroy Angels will release their self-titled debut EP as a free download via the How to Destroy Angels website. [Pitchfork]

I seem to feature guitar and violin players over most other instruments, but you have to remember that a drummer is the glue that keeps the band together.

We Are The Fallen

We Are the Fallen is a rock band consisting of former American Idol contestant Carly Smithson, Marty O'Brien and former Evanescence members Ben Moody, John LeCompt, and Rocky Gray. The band's name is an allusion to Evanescence's 2003 album, Fallen, which has resulted in criticism for their very similar sound to Evanescence. In a Los Angeles Times interview, co-founder of Evanescence, Ben Moody, said that We Are the Fallen differs from Evanescence in that "everyone is equal" and that it has "more energy than Evanescence could ever muster." He also stated, "We cannot try to be who we are. If there is some similarity in sound, it's because that genre was created by us."     ....more

Enough of the Evanescence vs We are the Fallen already. They are both good bands and goodness knows there is enough room out there for both of them. We Are The Fallen's new album is out now, judge for yourself.

Placebo are an alternative rock band formed in London in 1994, and currently consists of Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal and Steve Forrest. To date, they have released six studio albums, six EPs and twenty-nine singles. The band have gained a considerable amount of international recognition, selling over one million albums in the UK and over ten million worldwide.
Placebo are best known for hit songs such as "Nancy Boy", "Pure Morning", "Every You Every Me", "Infra-Red", a cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill", and "For What It's Worth". Their style has varied greatly. The band's first album featured a raw sound and a fairly minimalistic instrumental lineup, but proceeding albums have had a slower, more melancholic tone and they started experimenting with synthesizers and other, less traditional, forms of sound production (particularly after Black Market Music).
The band have gained some measure of notoriety for the sexualities of its members (Olsdal is gay and Molko is bisexual) as well as for their excessive lifestyles and Molko's androgynous image, which are often referred to in their songs.

How have I been missing out on this band? Yeasayer Amazing! Vocally there is some Tiny Tim mixed with Aphrodite's Child via the B52's and David Byrne. And musically mix in some Santana, some Yes, some Talking Heads and maybe even some middle eastern belly dancing.
That doesn't sound so good, but that is probably just my twisted imagination.
We really need a Later with Jools Holland type of program in the USA, something that plays new and different artists and not just the established bands or the Bieber's of this world.
However the band does sound good, check them out here on Later with Jools Holland.

Yeasayer (pronounced /’jeɪseɪ.ər/) is a band based in Brooklyn, New York. The band was formed in 2006 and consists of three core members, Chris Keating, Ira Wolf Tuton, and Anand Wilder. They first came to attention after appearing at the SXSW festival in early 2007. Their debut album All Hour Cymbals was released in October 2007. Yeasayer described their music as “middle eastern-psych-snap-gospel”. Live performances often include psychedelic visuals.

Yeasayer released their second studio album, ODD BLOOD, in February 2010, featuring more pop music influences than earlier work. The band revealed that the album came out of a massive acid trip in New Zealand. Peter Gabriel’s drummer Jerry Marotta helped to record Odd Blood in an upstate New York studio packed with rare synths and percussion instruments from around the globe to create the characteristic worldbeat sound of the album. The Black Keys

If you haven't seen the official video for Tighten Up you are missing out.
This is one cute video for a great song.
These kids get an early intro to life.

Tighten Up

The Black Keys are an American blues-rock music duo consisting of vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer/producer Patrick Carney. They were formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001.
The band is frequently compared to The White Stripes (also a blues-based musical duo of drums and vocals/guitar that started around the turn of the millennium) and to the stylings of The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, and Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead are fans of the band. Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has also stated in an interview that he enjoys listening to the band. Arctic Monkeys' drummer Matt Helders can be seen in a Black Keys t-shirt in an interview on MTV's RAW. .... more

And who can forget their wonderful hunk of blues from the movie "Black Snake Moan".

When The Lights Go Out

don't it hurt so bad
when you're standin in the sun
in the bottom of your heart
you don't love no one

you can be oh so mean
I just can't see, no in between
you know what the sun's all about
when the lights go out

what a way to live
back of your class
end of the line
always last

you can be oh so mean
I just can't see, no in between
you know what the sun's all about
when the lights go out

see the moon
see the stars
from your lonely seat
in your lonely cars

you can be oh so mean
I just can't see, no in between
you know what the sun's all about
when the lights go out.

Pop in the UK in the 60's

The 60's (and the late 50's) are arguably the best time in music history.
There were many classics in both songs and groups that appeared in that period.
So today I figured I would group together some clips from various UK TV music shows. Since that's where I was in the 60's and that's what I remember (sometimes).

Here is a bunch of brief excerpts from BBC music programs of the 60's.

Now I'm not 100% on board the whole Mersey scene, being from London we all knew that The Rolling Stones were way better than the Beatles. But maybe that was a southern bias.

And you can laugh at these fashions now but at least we could all walk normally without our "pants on the ground".

And finally some clips from Ready Steady Go, which was always fun but had it's fair amount of lip sync controversy which was prevalent, as can be seen in this clip.

Secret Chiefs 3

I do like me some music with a middle-eastern influence. Give a listen to Secret Chiefs 3. They have the middle-eastern thing, the surf thing and a few other things going for them.

Secret Chiefs 3, also known as SC3, is a group of musicians led by composer and producer Trey Spruance, former guitarist of Mr. Bungle. Their studio recordings and tours have featured different line-ups, as the group performs a wide range of musical styles including surf rock, Persian, Arab, Indian, death metal, film music, electronic music, and various others. The Secret Chiefs 3 toured with Les Claypool in Spring 2008 and the Oddity Faire in 2009.
Spruance formed the band in the mid-nineties with fellow Mr. Bungle members Trevor Dunn on bass and Danny Heifetz on drums. Some of the many musicians who have since recorded or toured with SC3 include violinist Eyvind Kang, percussionist William Winant, drummer Ches Smith, bassist Shahzad Ismaily, former Mr. Bungle member Clinton "Bär" McKinnon, and Estradasphere members Timb Harris, Jason Schimmel, and Tim Smolens. Musicians tend to float in and out of SC3, so the concept of "current" and "former" members isn't very applicable.

Secret Chiefs 3 - Vajra - Live At The El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. - June 9, 2009. This performance includes the bands original drummer Danny Heifetz known for his work with Mr. Bungle and Tango Saloon. This line up also includes Trey Spruance (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More), guitarist Davin Givhan (Stolen Babies), Toby Driver (Kayo Dot) and amazing violin work by Timb Harris, best known for his work with the eclectic band Estradasphere.

One of my favorite tunes by them is this one, albeit short and sweet.

Flight Facilities featuring Giselle Roselli

Flight Facilities featuring Giselle Roselli have this great sounding tune currently going the rounds. You know it has to be good when so many remixes appear.

19-year-old multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter, Giselle Rosselli, was born and raised in Sydney but is currently living and studying in Melbourne. Brought up into a creative household of artists and architects, Giselle began her obsession with writing music and wordplay from an early age as a way of finding creative independence from her family. As both a songwriter and producer her style has adapted into a contemporary hybrid of electronica and folk, her incorporation of world instruments and looped effects bringing together a wide range of sounds. Recent attention has brought her acclaim from a range of unexpected corners of the globe such as from American celebrity gossip figure Perez Hilton, Belgium based DJs, Aeroplane, French trio, Yelle and the UK series 'Skins'. On top of releasing her debut ep expected for the end of 2010, Giselle is collaborating with artists such as Vorad Fils, Flight Facilities, Seekae and Bagraiders on projects being released at scattered intervals throughout the year. Above all attention, it is Giselle's distinct sound, intricate vocals and unconventional lyrics that put her at the forefront of this new generation of music. [MySpace]

All I could find out about Flight Facilities was kind of name, rank and serial number kind of stuff.
Members: Captain Earnest Bon-Huffington, Madame Francois de Lundenkopf, Esquire Winston Humphries III and Fred
Genre: Indie

Record Label: Bang Gang 12 inches

But we are here for the music so just enjoy.

My Heart Belongs To Cecilia Winter

My Heart Belongs To Cecilia Winter are a group from Zurich. Switzerland.
In the past two years, this Zurich-based trio gained the reputation of an irresistible live band and stepped up from being a local phenomenon to an international insider tip. The band's catchy yet erratic indie-folk songwriting with a rock 'n' roll heart, combined with their intuition for atmosphere and glamour, soon led to comparisons with Arcade Fire and earned them an ever-growing fanbase. Scott Matthew and Rufus Wainwright like them, concert-goers sway in euphoria and their debut record Our Love Will Cut Through Everything is a masterpiece. [Source]

This is a very evocative piece, ignoring the "every male fantasy" video listen to the sound. This guy has an amazing voice.

My Heart My Heart

My Heart Belongs To Cecilia Winter unplugged im KiFF Aarau.

In their own words:
“Wenn die Drei noch einwenig üben, werden sie die neuen Arcade Fire.“
(Zitty Magazin Berlin)

Das Herz ist eine miese Gegend, ein dunkler Wald, den man eigentlich meiden sollte. Trotzdem landet man immer wieder mittendrin.
The Jesus And Mary Chain.
Our Love Will Cut Through Everything.

The Juliets

The Juliets, from Ypsilanti, Michigan, formed in late 2008. Pianist Jeremy Freer (formerly of his namesake band, Freer) and cellist Kaylan Mitchell (formerly of the band, not the country; Canada) conceived the idea for the band over a glass (or two or three) of red wine. Violinist Sarah Myers soon joined, and the trio began writing classically influenced pop songs as well as primarily classical works. Former members include bassist (Kip Donlon, Silverghost) and drummer/sound designer (Scott Masson, OFFICE). The quintet saw their work come to fruition with 2010’s acclaimed self-titled debut album, The Juliets, which you can download for whatever price you choose at The Juliets are now embarking on the second chapter in their storybook; and they’re determined to keep creating beautiful and compelling classically inspired musical works.

Any group that heavily features violin is a step ahead in my book. The fact that they come from my previous state and they make good music is a bonus. Check them out.

The Juliets sound is most often referred to as baroque pop, although there is definitely a classical influence in these songs as well. Freer on piano and acoustic guitar is joined by Kip Donlon on bass, Scott Masson on drums, Kaylan Mitchell on cello and Sarah Myers on violin. The prominence of the strings on every song makes for a refreshing and revelatory listen.

It’s hard to single out songs when one gem after another keeps hitting your ear. The upbeat opener, “Sweetheart”, boasts a euphoric chorus with Freer breaking into a soaring falsetto. “The Letter” was the first track I ever heard the band play, and you know what they say about first impressions. It made me take notice immediately. Jeremy Freer has a gift for composing unforgettable melodies and this track certainly exemplifies that. ~ nowitson

Sunday Song

The Juliets from Detroit perform "Sunday Song" at the EP Theater in Pilsen, Chicago. April 2, 2010.

It's all done in the best POSSIBLE taste!

After the short post earlier I just had to re-visit the great Kenny Everett.
To show some more of his comedy and craziness.
Kenny loved dressing up, and was way ahead of his time in multitasking.
Here he is as the Bee Gees (all of them).

One of his many characters was US Army General (Brig. General Hiram P. Bombthebastards). A 27 star General.

"We'll round 'em up – and put 'em in a field – and bomb the bastards!". priceless

Then you combine Kenny with Billy Connolly and you know you have a problem.

One of the other regular features on his show was "Hot Gossip". Not sure why the Gossip but the "Hot" was obvious. Here they do the great Cerrone number, Supernature.

Couldn't do this without at least a moment from "Angry of Mayfair" and "Sid Snot".

And finally today, this could go one forever, we present "Up Your Way" with Verity Treacle.

Aga Zaryan

Some cool jazz sounds from Aga Zaryan. Keep a look out for her new album "Looking Walking Being".
Aga Zaryan (born Agnieszka Skrzypek January 17, 1976) is an internationally recognized jazz vocalist of the new generation.

Though (in jazz terms) young, her tone and delivery carry the hallmarks of classical jazz for a modern audience and as such is part of a new wave of Polish jazz artists recognised on the international scene. She is known for her distinctive style and intimate approach to singing, with a characteristic lightness of phrasing and warm, slightly matte-toned voice. Her performances are reminiscent of such female jazz vocalists as Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae and Joni Mitchell. This year Aga Zaryan was signed to Blue Note records to join such names as such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Dianne Reeves, she is also the first Polish artist ever to release an album on Blue Note. ...... more

And here we have a beautiful rendition of a Leonard Cohen classic.

Note: although the video appears to be 9 1/2 minutes it's only 6:39 so you can stop it at that point.

Kenny Everett Presents

I was a fan of Kenny Everett way before he did TV, his radio shows were always hilarious. But of course he did have a great TV show while it lasted.
Here's a few times when he introduced some great guest artists.

Chas 'n' Dave - There Ain't No Pleasing You

One of their more thoughtful tunes.

Sid Snot introduces Freddie Mercury

Kenny Everett 1979 Finale - Thin Lizzy & Sex Pistols

Kenny Everett (born Maurice James Christopher Cole in Crosby, Merseyside; 25 December 1944 – 4 April 1995) was an English comedian, radio DJ and television entertainer. He is best known for his career as a radio DJ and for the Kenny Everett television shows.

In 1974 he moved to a less high-pressure time slot at Capital. Here he further developed his style and his cult following, and featured both what he thought the best in music (Queen, Chris Rainbow) and the worst, which led to the popular Kenny Everett's World's Worst Record Show programmes, later released as an album, with slightly different tracks. Several shows featured the "Bottom 30": compilations (from listeners' votes) of the world's worst records during this period, including some tracks by well-known personalities not known for their singing, notably William Shatner, Captain James T Kirk of Star Trek with his version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and "The Shifting Whispering Sands" by Eamonn Andrews.

WWR was one of my favorite parts of the show.

In October 1981, Everett returned to BBC Radio, this time on Radio 2, on Saturday from 11am-1pm. This lasted until 1983, when he was once again dismissed after making a rude joke about Margaret Thatcher: "When England was a kingdom, we had a king. When we were an empire, we had an emperor. Now we're a country ... and we have Margaret Thatcher". This remark reportedly led to the non-renewal of his contract with BBC Radio 2.      Love that joke.

Gotan Project

The Tango, the sexy passionate dance of Argentina.
The Gotan Project will take you there, even though they are from France.
Gotan Project is a musical group based in Paris, consisting of musicians Philippe Cohen Solal (French), Eduardo Makaroff (Argentine), and Christoph H. Müller (Swiss, former member of Touch El Arab).
Gotan Project formed in 1999. Their first release was "Vuelvo Al Sur/El Capitalismo Foraneo" in 2000, followed by the album La Revancha del Tango in 2001. Their music is clearly tango, but also uses electronic elements such as samples, beats, and breaks.
Live material was also broadcast on Gilles Peterson's world music show Worldwide on BBC Radio 1 in May 2004. Philippe Cohen Solal has also released a DJ set: Inspiración Espiración - A Gotan Project DJ Set Selected & Mixed by Philippe Cohen Solal (2004). This album is a compilation of classic tangos from the likes of Anibal Troilo, Ástor Piazzolla and Gotan Project remixes. The album also includes a bonus CD with the track "La Cruz del Sur" - which was meant to be included on La Revancha del Tango, but did not make the cut in 2001.
Before Gotan Project, Müller and Cohen Solal formed a duo called Boyz from Brazil.

Tango dance and tango music originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the area of the Rio de la Plata, and spread to the rest of the world soon after.
Early tango was known as tango criollo, or simply tango. Today, there are many tango dance styles, including Argentine Tango, Uruguayan Tango, Ballroom tango (American and International styles), Finnish tango and vintage tangos. What many consider to be the authentic tango is that closest to that originally danced in Argentina and Uruguay, though other types of tango have developed into mature dances in their own right.
In 2009, Uruguay and Argentina suggested the Tango to be declared a world heritage of humanity, in October of the same year UNESCO approved it. [Wikipedia]

A big happy birthday to one of the greats. Bob Dylan is 69 today. And showing no signs of slowing down. From the first time I saw him live through the many times I have seen him since he has never given a bad performance. Just a 100% true musician.

Maybe he will get together with some old friends to celebrate his birthday.

Great news for all you Rush fans out there. The band is currently in the midst of writing new material and will be touring in the Summer of 2010 on the "Time Machine Tour". They kick of in Albuquerque, NM on June 29 at the Hard Rock Casino, and end up in West Palm Beach, FL on October 2. With stops along the way on both coast and in Canada.

I have to thank a friend for reminding me about them, thanks Jacqueline.
In the meantime here's a couple of their classics. I'm guessing the hairstyles may have changed.

Biel Ballester Trio

Some wonderful Manouche music to brighten this Monday morning.

Biel Ballester studied classical guitar at the prestigious Luthier School in Barcelona, Spain. There he spent two years under the instruction of teacher/concertist Alex Garrobé and four years with teacher/concertist Fernando Rodriguez. Complimenting his formal musical studies, Biel has also taken guitar master classes from respected musicians such as José Tomás, David Russell, Aniello Desiderio, Manuel Barrueco, Marco Socias, Hopckinson Smith and Jordi Savall (the last two specializing in Baroque music). Biel finished his curriculum at Barcelona's superior conservatorium in the year 2000. Subsequent demand for his awe-inspiring style and technique have enabled him to perform in several countries such as Spain, France, Holland and Germany including multiple appearances at Barcelona's International Jazz Festival, The International Jazz Festival of Terrassa, and the International Guitar Festival of Mallorca. Making waves on both sides of the Atlantic, two of Biel's tracks featured here were selected for inclusion on the Various Artists compilations, Django Festival Volumes 3 & 4, produced by Hot Club Records in Oslo, Norway, placing the Catalan guitarist in the company of international jazz stars such as Jimmy Rosenberg and Angelo Debarre among others. A young talent holding great promise, Biel Ballester is on the short list of possible artists slated to perform at several upcoming international Django Reinhardt Tribute Festivals including those in the United States. So be on the lookout for the Biel Ballester Trio performing in a city near you. [Refined Records]

The European style created by Django Reinhardt was a mix between traditional Gipsy music and the French Musette and American swing music. These styles are mixed further by this ensemble with Bossanova and Rumba.

Urs Karpatz

Once again a big thank you to Bluesmen-Worldmusic for introducing me to this wonderful group.
It’s really pluralism which characterize best Urs Karpatz, group of polyphonies, polyrythms and polyinstruments.
This ensemble, with its extraordinary ethnomusical range, plays and sings in romanes, gypsy language, a high quality repertory, reflecting and echoing gypsy culture in Europe. The group members come from Ukraine, Hungary and Romania.

Urs Karpatz!!!! This is an amazing group. They are absolute masters of their craft and display an unsurpassed professionalism. Hard working and disciplined, their joie de vivre is genuine and their energy is unbelievable. Their mesmerizing music conjures Gypsy camp-fire dreams. Traditional styles and techniques are used with both standards and original songs. Strong vocals and harmonies, intoxicating rhythms, instruments played with impeccable virtuoisity by each of the group's members, all combine to win over all listeners. Nobody doesn't like Urs Karpatz.

Czardas de Monti

Méditerranéennes de Portet-sur-Garonne

And finally today, maybe something you would not expect from a "gypsy band", a very delicate take on an absolute classic. Bravo.
Ave Maria

"Urs Karpatz don’t care about fashions... their romani culture sweats through each one of their compositions or their interpretations. Full of vibes, lively music, gypsy music !"
Tony GATLIF, movie maker

"URS Karpatz won aver me immediately…
Indeed, what makes this group is that they really and greatly follow the work of disappeared gypsy masters. And I see that Urs Karpatz works with an unusual professionnalism for gypsies "on the road". To the antipodes of gypsy musics "for tourists", Urs Karpatz interpreters, without any concession to soppy, perfect virtuosos instrumentists, reach their aim with brio. And they join those who proove us that Nietzsche were right when saying "without music, life would be a mistake...." Long life to URS Karpatz !"

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals perform an amazing version of White Rabbit, only fitting that the first name is Grace.
White Rabbit

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals perform a cover of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" at the Burlington Waterfront Show in 2009. A recorded version of the song is featured on Almost Alice, a collection of tracks inspired by Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland.

A truly amazing version of the Junior Parker (also covered by Elvis of course) tune Mystery Train.

Things I Never Needed

On a Friday afternoon in February, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals spent time outside of San Diego recording stripped down versions of songs from their new album. "Things I Never Needed" is the first in a series of them.

Grace Potter and The Nocturnals are a young, Vermont-based band gaining national attention by selling out tours and stealing hearts of audiences across the nation. The band’s original blend of roots, funky blues, soul, and rock conjures up a nostalgic sound most likely found in a record collection from the sixties and early seventies.

Leading the charge is 25-year-old Grace Potter whose dynamic vocal ability has drawn comparisons to legends Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin and more recently Sheryl Crow and Joan Osborne. Her unique style behind the Hammond B-3 and piano is also gaining widespread recognition. ....more
