Back It Up

Jess Chalker

Jess Chalker is an unsigned (why?) talent from down under.

Since gaining well over 400,000 hits on Youtube for her song Said the Raindrop to the Seed late last year, Jess Chalker has enjoyed a whirlwind introduction to what promises to be a very exciting career.
This has included touring as a support act for acclaimed Australian artist LIOR, performing duets with the ARIA-award winner in establishments such as the SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE, SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY, and 2009’s APRA AWARDS in Australia, not to mention securing herself a spot in the top 12 of thousands of entries in the recent VANDA AND YOUNG songwriting competition and a memorable appearance at Peat's Ridge Festival. Altogether, not too bad for a girl whose humble beginnings began in her living room singing into a webcam just over 18 months ago…
Although classical piano lessons were the ordre du jour for many of her younger years, Jess Chalker’s fascination with the guitar began early. Her father, once a keen flamenco player, established (but later sold) the now iconic Sydney musical instrument store, The Guitar Factory, where as a very young girl Chalker would often spend long hours hoping to catch a glimpse of clients like Tommy Emmanuel or John Williamson strolling through the door for guitar repairs.

Matt Stevens

"Matt Stevens, looping guitar specialist and "One man wall of sound" .Prepare to be blasted away by incredible Spanish, Jazz and Rock rhythms with leads that are out of this world" - Spratton Folk Festival

"Even though that record is a must-buy for anyone with an interest in acoustic Guitar music, his regular online concerts or live performances are just as intoxicating. Let there be no doubt about it, after all: Matt Stevens may have some delicious studio cuts on offer, but the stage is still the best place to appreciate this both experimental and deadly catchy music."

Matt Stevens is a musician and composer from North London. An instrumental artist, he uses an acoustic guitar and a sampler to create multi layered tracks live. This is often called Live Looping. His music is compared with artists as diverse as John Mclaughlin and Sigur Ros. He plays live all over the UK. Last year saw the release of Echo his well received debut album.
He has composed for short films(including the award winning Daddys Little Helper) and his live work is often compared to watching a one man guitar orchestra or wall of sound.
He perfoms to people from all over the world using Ustream.TV

You have to ignore the background chatter, but I guess performing in a pub one has to put up with that kind of stuff.

Blue Filter

Matt Stevens performing his atmospheric number Blue Filter at the Spratton Fringe Open Mic at the Kings Head. Matt was the special guest of the night and put on a really great show providing something that most people in the audience had never had a chance to experience.

Drama In The Coals (part)

A short film to promote the album - the song is the end of Drama In The Coals.

West Green

The Spratton Gathering - The 3rd in a series of events organised by the AFCollective - was a huge success where many friendships were made or reaffirmed and jamming, drinking and joking were the order of the day.

Another tip from Simon. Thanks

Eric Mongrain

For today's brilliant guitarist I have to thank Simon, a commentator on an earlier post for steering me in this direction with his suggestion.
This guy is totally amazing, very nice technique.
Erik Mongrain (born April 12, 1980 in Montreal, Québec, Canada) is a Canadian composer and guitarist. He uses a unique acoustic style including a two-handed lap tapping technique on the acoustic guitar.
Erik Mongrain taught himself guitar at the age of 14. As a boy he was mostly interested in sports, but picked up an interest in the guitar and began to teach himself to play by ear. Erik started out playing the electric guitar, but developed an interest in classical and acoustic guitar after hearing the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. Erik taught himself to read music, and began composing.
Erik Mongrain was inspired early on by the work of Metallica, Jimi Hendrix, and Kurt Cobain. When he was 18, Erik heard the work of guitarist Don Ross, and he said "This was a new revelation to me. I finally found my niche." After that, Erik was heavily influenced by the work of Michael Hedges. Erik also began to experiment with a technique known as lap tapping, in which the player lays the guitar across their lap, and taps the strings on the fret board with both hands. more .....

Erik Mongrain, displays his distinctive lap-tapping technique. Live on Jools Holland's show, BBC 2. Broadcast on Friday 6th November 2009; recorded on Wednesday 4th November 2009.

Texting and driving do not mix

I know it is only illegal in some states, it should be illegal in all.
But practically everywhere the laws are ignored, common sense should tell you not to be texting and driving. But that seems in short supply.
Here's a short movie to prove the point, it's from England where they seem to do the "scare warning" stuff so much better. But it is still pertinent in all countries where there is "texting" and motor vehicles.

Ring of Fire

"Ring of Fire" is a country music song popularized by Johnny Cash and co-written by June Carter (wife of Johnny Cash) and Merle Kilgore. The single appears on Cash's 1963 compilation album, Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash.
The song was recorded on March 25, 1963 and became the biggest hit of his career, staying at number one on the charts for seven weeks.

This has always been onb of my favorite songs. My mother told me I was born in a ring of fire, since the hospital where I was born was in Highbury, London and it was one of those nights in the height of the blitz. The Nazi's had been bombing London again and the hospital was un-touched, but most of the buildings surrounding it were destroyed.

I doubt that's why I like this song, but the instilled memory is there.

Ray Charles

From his second appearance on the Johnny Cash Show this is Ray Charles giving Johnny's No. 1 hit "Ring of Fire" a soul treatment. It was released on his then current country album "Love Country Style". Taped on Ray's 40th birthday this was aired on Sep. 23rd, 1970.

Wes Bryan

Wes Bryan is a singer who to be honest I had never heard of. But he's from my era, and sings really well. Can't find out too much about him, I'm guessing his hits were more in the USA and maybe didn't make it to the UK. But listening to them now, I know I would have bought them back in the day. I really dig his version of Melody D'Amour. Plus on reading further on his interesting web site he is a friend of PJ Proby, any one who is a friend of PJ Proby has to be an alright guy.  But the main thing is I really like his sound.  Give him a listen.

Groove Armada

Groove Armada are an electronic music duo comprising Andy Cato and Tom Findlay from England. They are now primarily based in London, and continue to produce and record music as well as hosting semi-regular club nights in London and an annual London festival under the Lovebox banner.
The group has collaborated with a diverse array of artists including Neneh Cherry, DJ Gram’Ma Funk, Sophie Barker, Nappy Roots, Fudge Dog, Sunshine Anderson, Mutya Buena, Jeru The Damaja and Richie Havens. Tom Findlay has described working with Prince as his dream collaboration, although there are no plans for such at the moment.
By 1997 they had released a few singles including 4 Tune Cookie and the song that first brought them minor fame, "At the River", which sampled "Old Cape Cod" by Patti Page, (which was featured in the film Die Hard 2). The song has gone on to be one of Groove Armada’s most well-known tracks and has since been found on numerous chill out compilations.

I always loved their "At the river" and this new album looks like they are keeping up their high standards.

Mamy Rock

Ruth Flowers, aka Mamy Rock the sixty nine year old rocking granny. She rules France I guess.

In trademark giant sunglasses, Ruth Flowers, a 69-year-old from Bristol, is wowing the youth on the dancefloors of Paris.
Behind the decks at Queen, the biggest and brashest nightclub in Paris, the DJ lifts her arms to the heavens.
White ticker tape falls on to the crowd below, who hurl themselves around to the throbbing bass, intermittently yelling their approval.
They push to get to the booth, taking photos on their phones as the hottest star of the moment lines up the next tune.
But Ruth Flowers is not your average DJ. Coming up to her 70th birthday, when many are well settled into retirement, the grandmother from Bristol has become an international sensation, in demand in clubs throughout Europe.
With spiky silver hair and scarlet lipstick, gold bomber jacket, baggy tracksuit bottoms, bling jewellery, and trademark giant black sunglasses, Flowers plays down the new-found fame of her twilight years.
"I'm not a superstar DJ," she said, before donning her diamante-encrusted headphones and starting her set. "I'm just a DJ."
Mamy Rock, as she is known on the circuit, came to the wheels of steel later than most. She fell in love with dance music after accompanying her grandson to a London nightclub.
"The bouncers didn't want to let me in at first, I was quite a lot older than the usual clientele, but once I got inside I hugely enjoyed it. I thought 'I can do this.' My husband had died, I was retired, I had the time, so why not?"
Her grandson, who she says is "smitten" with the idea of his gran as an international DJ, put her in touch with a young French producer, who helped her develop her sound and image.
"I like to mix the old and the new, so I might put electro alongside an old favourite like the Rolling Stones," she said.
Aurelien Simon, the 28-year-old producer behind the DJ, said he helps Flowers interject modern music through her set. "But Ruth always has the last word," he insisted.
Still, there is no sign of her favourite band, Queen, in tonight's playlist.
"Freddie Mercury … what a voice," she said, playing with the huge skulls and crossbones ring on her finger. "But I like to please the crowds, I give them what they want."
There were few complaints on the dancefloor where Flowers received intense, and somewhat bizarre, adulation from the assembled sweaty Parisian youth.
"Mamy Rock! Mamy Rock!" shouted Pauline Robert, a 23-year-old student, over the relentless thud of the music.
"We adore Mamy Rock. She loves to make us dance. We all want her as our grandmother."
For Alexandra Ledys, 21, the appeal lies in her originality. "It's so cool, I've never seen a DJ that old before," he said. "Music brings together all generations."   more ..........

Gypsy Swing

Gypsy jazz (also known as "Gypsy Swing") is an idiom often said to have been started by guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt in the 1930s. Because its origins are largely in France it is often called by the French name, "Jazz manouche," or alternatively, "manouche jazz," even in English language sources. Django was foremost among a group of Gypsy guitarists working in and around Paris in the 1930s through the 1950s, a group which also included the brothers Pierre "Baro" Ferret, Etienne "Sarane" Ferret, and Jean "Matelo" Ferret and Reinhardt's brother Joseph "Nin-Nin" Reinhardt.
Many of the musicians in this style worked in Paris in various popular Musette ensembles. The Musette style waltz remains an important component in the Gypsy jazz repertoire. Reinhardt was noted for combining a dark, chromatic Gypsy flavor with the swing articulation of the period. This combination is critical to this style of jazz. In addition to this his approach continues to form the basis for contemporary Gypsy jazz guitar. Reinhardt's most famous group, the Quintette du Hot Club de France, also brought fame to jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli.
Gypsy jazz, along with traditional Gypsy music, is learned by the passing down of knowledge from older generations. Many Gypsy musicians do not read notated music. It is more common for beginners to spend hours learning and memorizing songs from recordings and gleaning techniques from more experienced players.

Well here's a bunch from various places around the world. Kick back and listen, bet you can't stop your toes from tapping.

I'm not an expert but I'm guessing this is minimalism in music.  It certainly is in the name of the band and their albums, and even their album covers.  But it's good stuff, worth a listen.

jj are a band that release music through the Gothenburg-based record label Sincerely Yours, which was founded by the Swedish pop group The Tough Alliance. The name jj is a reference to the French film Jules et Jim. The band released their debut single "jj n° 1" in early 2009 and a couple of months later they released their debut album jj n° 2. Both the debut single and the debut album received a Best New Music inclusion from Pitchfork Media and a rating of 8 and 8.6 respectively.
On December 24, 2009 it was announced that the American record label Secretly Canadian had signed jj to their label. At the same time, the release date for jj's second full length album was slated. The album, which will be called jj n° 3, will be released in the United States and Sweden on March 9, 2010.

The cat lover in me saw this and could not resist.

These are Sand Cat Kittens at the Cincinnati Zoo.
The Sand cat (Felis margarita), also referred to as the "sand dune cat", is a small wild cat distributed over African and Asian deserts. The name "desert cat" is reserved for Felis silvestris lybica, the African wildcat, but it could be appropriate for this species. It lives in those arid areas that are too hot and dry even for the desert cat: the Sahara, the Arabian Desert, and the deserts of Iran and Pakistan. It lives for about 13 years in captivity.
The Sand cat's length averages almost 50 cm (20 in), plus a 30 cm (12 in) tail. The average weight of a sand cat is 2.7 kg (6 lbs). Their heads are conspicuously broad, and their ears are large, pointed, and widely spaced to the point they can be flattened horizontally or even pointing down (this aids in hunting). The colour of the fur is a pale sandy yellow, with pallid bars, which are sometimes hardly visible. Generally the bars are more visible in the African subspecies. The mucosa of their eyelids is a striking black. Their paws are covered with long hairs that allow it to tolerate and easily maneuver the hot sand of its environment. The sand cat can survive in temperatures ranging from −5 °C (23 °F) to 52 °C (126 °F).

Tomorrow, in a year - A Darwin electro-opera

This is just amazing.  Totally mind blowing.

The world seen through the eyes of Charles Darwin forms the basis for the performance 'Tomorrow, in a year'. Theatre production company Hotel Pro Formas striking visuals blend with pop-duo The Knife's ground-breaking music to create a new species of electro-opera.

Hotel Pro Forma is supported by the Danish Arts Council - Committee for the Performing Arts.

Rehearsals at Royal Danish Theatre

One last clip to keep you enthralled.

The Knife, Karin’s project with bother Olof, are to release the studio version of the opera ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’, in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock, on the 1st March 2010
Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species’, The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme. They extensively researched Darwin related literature and articles, with Olof attending a field recording workshop in the Amazon to find inspiration and to record sounds.
The first track from the album, called Colouring Of Pigeons, is free to download from the knife’s website here. You can also sign up for more news about The Knife there.

Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela

Orquesta Juvenil Simón Bolívar de Venezuela is a Venezuelan youth orchestra. The economist José Antonio Abreu established the orchestra on 12 February 1975. The orchestra is under the auspices of Fundacion del Estado para el Sistema Nacional de las Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Venezuela, known colloquially as El Sistema. The orchestra is based at the Teresa Carreño Cultural Complex in Caracas and is considered the apex of the nation's system of 220 youth orchestras.
Gustavo Dudamel has been the orchestra's artistic director since 1999. The orchestra and Dudamel have made three recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, one of Beethoven; one of Mahler; and a collection of Latin American music. In August 2007, the orchestra made its debut at the BBC Proms, to critical acclaim and an enthusiastic reception from the audience[citation needed]: the concert was broadcast live on BBC4 TV; the following year the orchestra were featured in an evening-long programme of music from South America on the UK radio station Classic FM (8 August 2008).
A BBC TV documentary programme in the Imagine arts series, first shown on 18 November 2008, examined the history and ethos of the orchestra and its role in tackling the social problems of Venezuela and its success in transforming the lives of some of the nation's poorest children, including interviews with Dudamel, key members of the orchestra, and current and former students. Hosted by Alan Yentob, the film took a detailed look at the unique music education system of Venezuela, of which the orchestra is an integral part, and described the recent attempt to imitate its success in a deprived part of Scotland.
The orchestra has previously released other recordings, including several ballet pieces in the early 1990s on the 'Dorian Recordings' Label.

Curved Air

I was playing some Curved Air bootlegs from back in the day (1974 and 1976), and I wondered if they were on You Tube. I was pleasantly surprised to find stuff from 2008 and 2009. I never knew they were back touring, one of the minuses of living in a cultural backwater.

First up though from 1972 a Belgium TV appearance.

Back Street Luv [2008]

Recorded at The Picturedrome Holmfirth Yorkshire on Curved Air's "Reborn" tour.
Sonja is around 59 here, she's aged well.

Sonja Kristina Linwood (born 14 April 1949, in Brentwood, Essex) is an English musician, usually known as Sonja Kristina, and most famous as vocalist for Curved Air.
Around late 1967/very early 1968, Sonja Kristina was helping to run (and was performing at) the Wednesday evening sessions at London's Troubadour Folk Club. She was appearing generally on the folk scene as "Sonja" having previously had a number of TV slots on the kids' show "Song and Story". She also performed in the stage musical Hair and sang (briefly) with The Strawbs following the departure of Sandy Denny.
Curved Air had a changing line-up over its nine albums (1970 - 1976 and 1990), and Sonja was the only member to take part in every line-up.
Kristina married Stewart Copeland in 1982, having met him while he was first road manager and then drummer for Curved Air (1974-1976). They divorced in 1991.
After Curved Air she returned to Hair for a second spell. Since then she has performed solo, including her involvement with the acid folk movement in London in the early 1990s, culminating in her critically acclaimed Songs from the Acid Folk in 1991, and recently in multi-media duo MASK, along with Marvin Ayres.
In 2008 she is taking part in a series of Curved Air reunion concerts.
You can watch the Sonja Kristina story here if you have an hour to spare.

Young Mother [2009]

Curved Air perform "Young Mother" live at Club Citta Tokyo, on January 17th 2009.
Stunning performances all round, with more than a nod to the Psychedelic Rock of the late 60s.

Vivaldi [2009]

Video of Curved air performing their classic track, "Vivaldi" at Club Citta in Tokyo on 17th January, 2009.

Curved Air the group evolved out of the band Sisyphus, and was named after the piece "A Rainbow in Curved Air" by contemporary composer Terry Riley. The musicians came from quite different artistic backgrounds, classic, folk, and electronic sound, which resulted in a mixture of progressive rock, folk rock, and fusion with classical elements. Along with High Tide, It's A Beautiful Day and East of Eden, Curved Air were one of the first rock bands to feature a violin.

The first lineup consisted of:

* Francis Monkman - (keyboards, guitar)
* Darryl Way - (electric violin, vocals)
* Sonja Kristina Linwood - (vocals)
* Florian Pilkington-Miksa - (Drum kit, drums)
* Rob Martin - (bass guitar).

Throughout their lifespan the band experienced frequent personnel changes. To name but a few of the better-known:

* Ian Eyre (born 11 September, in Knaresborough, Yorkshire) played bass on the second album
* Mike Wedgwood (born 19 May 1950, in Derby, Derbyshire) played bass on the third and fourth albums (later in Caravan)
* Eddie Jobson (later Roxy Music, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull and UK) played keyboards and violin on Air Cut
* John G. Perry (ex-Caravan) played bass on Midnight Wire
* Stewart Copeland (later of The Police) played drums on Midnight Wire and Airborne. He was a full member of the band between 1975 and 1977.
* Tony Reeves (born 18 April 1943, in Lee Green, South East London), (ex-Greenslade, Colosseum, John Mayall) played bass on Airborne.

Kristina was the only constant member of Curved Air. Monkman, member of Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, was later to play with John Williams in a group called Sky.

Everybody Was in the French Resistance... Now!

Everybody Was In The French Resistance…Now is the brainchild of charismatic frontman Eddie Argos and Dyan Valdes, whose gorgeous keyboard work adds to music drenched in pop, charm and wit. Best known for their work in Art Brut and The Blood Arm, respectively, Argos and Valdes’ ‘Fixin’ The Charts Vol.1′ includes ‘Hey, It’s Jimmy Mack’ – a response to the Martha & The Vandellas classic – and ‘My Way (Is Not Always The Best Way)’. A fun and inventive record full of lyrical bravado and catchy melodies.

Lydia Lunch on "Denton" (1994)

Interviewed by Andrew Denton on his late night show. From Australian TV

Lydia Lunch (born Lydia Koch on June 2, 1959 in Rochester, New York) is an American singer, poet, writer, and actress whose career spawned from the New York No Wave punk subculture in 1976. Her large and diverse body of work typically features provocative and confrontational delivery and has maintained an anti-commercial, do-it-yourself ethic, operating independently of major labels and distribution deals.
After arriving in New York City at the age of 16, Lunch moved into a large communal household of artists and musicians in NYC, including Kitty Bruce, daughter of Lenny Bruce. Soon after she earned the surname "Lunch" by regularly stealing lunches for her often starving artist friends. After befriending the 'godfathers of punk' Suicide at Max's Kansas City, she founded the short-lived but influential No Wave band Teenage Jesus & the Jerks in 1976 with her artistic partner, No Wave punk-funk-jazz musician James Chance. Both appeared on the seminal No Wave compilation No New York. Skybox invites you to listen/download maybe even buy their new CD.
Skybox is the vehicle of Chicago musicians Tim Ellis and Christian Fields, Mike Holtz and Dan Ingenthron. In 2006 the band released Arco Iris, their debut record, which garnered a nationwide cult following the breakthrough success of the song “Various Kitchen Utensils”. The band toured heavily in support of the record, including dates with Man Man, Ben Folds, Tilly and the Wall, Tally Hall, and The Figurines. In 2009 the band recorded the follow up album with acclaimed producer Sean O’Keefe at Smart Studios in Madison, WI and Chicago’s Black Sheep Music. “Morning After Cuts”, which will be released on January 19, 2010, finds singer Tim Ellis in peak songwriting form, careening from Bowie glam to Flaming Lips exuberance without bothering to apologize. Their live shows are deservedly storied, often evolving into spectacles that in the past have included costumes, confetti, go go dancers, snack cakes and the occasional chicken suit.

Give them a listen, you may well enjoy them.  I did.

The Avett Brothers

The Avett Brothers are a folk-rock band from Concord, North Carolina. The band is made up of two brothers, Scott Avett and Seth Avett, who play the banjo and guitar respectively, and Bob Crawford who plays the stand-up bass. They are often joined on tour by cellist Joe Kwon. Risen from the ashes of Seth and Scott's former rock band Nemo, the Avett Brothers combine bluegrass, country, punk, pop melodies, folk, rock and roll, honky tonk, and ragtime to produce a sound described by the San Francisco Chronicle as having the "heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of the Beatles, the raw energy of the Ramones."[1] The group itself eschews labels, feeling that "none would do the music the justice. It's simply left up to each person to extract his or her own account from the Avetts' music."

Go to Sleep

On November 2nd, 2008, the Avett Brothers, those venerable sons of NC, performed for a full house at Memorial Hall on UNC Chapel Hill campus. The crowd was eager to hear whatever the band brought forth, songs old and new. "Go to Sleep," from their 2007 release 'Emotionalism,' is an obvious crowd favorite.
Cirque Productions and friends were on hand to shoot the entire show using five HD cameras. We grabbed a stereo board mix on one camera and set up a small hard drive recorder with some room mics on the balcony, and mixed the two in post for the audio.

The Avett Brothers - I And Love And You - Austin City Limits January 23, 2010 this version was removed by YouTube due to a copyright claim by the Capitol of Texas Public Telecommunications Council, that's a heck of a mouthful for a spoilsport group.

Nolan's Cheddar

A faux commercial for "Nolan's Cheddar" turns out to be a hilarious short film.

Short Film by John Nolan
Includes some amazing animatronics...and cheese

In the Netherlands Daybroke’s founder Tom Sikkers is quite a household name. Since 1993 he has played every main stage in the country with national heroes Brotherhood Foundation and Wealthy Beggar. Besides performing with these bands he also worked as producer in his self-owned studio Larger than Live.Daybroke 2009 In that studio he has been recording his new music written for his latest enterprise Daybroke. In seeking feedback from his peers on these recordings he got the following response from Clif Norrell: “Sounds great! Really good work!”. Clif has worked with the likes of Nirvana, No Doubt and Jeff Buckley; Daybroke will be added to his impressive list in the near future.

After an extensive quest, Tom has found the ultimate band to present his music to the world in Jaap van der Heijden (Rock Nation), Jesse Klaasse (Woost) and Kasper van der Voort (the 925’s). In it’s brief existence Daybroke has already proudly supported acts like Eagles of Death Metal, STEREO and Triggerfinger.

Although Daybroke’s music is strongly rooted in American rock tradition, European influences also are evident. Much heard comparisons are Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Weezer, Muse et cetera. In short: solid, pounding, catchy and contagious Rock Music. Contagious not only applies to Daybroke’s music but also to their enthusiasm and work methods. Daybroke believes that the only way to accomplish anything is by working for it yourself, really really hard. This profound do-it-yourself attitude rubs off on everybody participating with the band. It is exactly how they managed to persuade talented independent filmmaker Tim Smit and upcoming actress Maud Dolsma to collaborate with them unselfishly in the production of a spectacular video to their first single Hey Girl. The album What Nature Started is scheduled for release through Rough Trade Distribution in March 2010

This is a cool track with a really different video. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

Lover You Should've Come Over (Jeff Buckley)

I'd Rather Go Blind

Holly Miranda does an amazing cover of "I'd Rather Go Blind" which was first recorded by Etta James. (Not as easy act to follow)

Bei Bei and Shawn Lee 古筝 荷蓓蓓

East meets West and fusion occurs. Amazing sounds.
Check out the new album Into the Wind marries a unique blend of ancient tradition with studio trickery. Eschewing all notions of superficial “Asian-fusion,” this uplifting, genre-bending sound clash, recalls the afro centric harping of Dorothy Ashby and hypnotic spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane. With Lee adding equal doses of hip hop, electric jazz, and soul sensibility to the backing tracks, the captivating sound of Bei Bei’s Guzheng (a 2000 year old Chinese string instrument) comes alive on peaceful mellow joints as much as it does on Kung-Fu flavored funk tunes.

Hot Thursday

East (Billy Paul Cover)

New music by Gu Zheng performer Bei Bei and Ubiquity producer Shawn Lee marries a unique blend of ancient tradition with studio trickery and spiritual jazz. This uplifting, genre-bending, soundclash recalls the afrocentric harping of Dorothy Ashby, the hypnotic style of Alice Coltrane, and the organic electronics of Four Tet and Quantic.
"East" is on the recent EP "Beauty and The Beats", put out September 8, 2009 on Ubiquity Records.
