John Butcher MP / Friend RIP

John and I were compadres at Datasaab/GCS between 1976 and 1979, when he got elected. We were a team, he was the salesman and I was his technical support guy. He was the most technically savvy salesman I ever worked with, and there have been a few. We lost touch after he became an MP and eventually I moved away from the UK. But I was saddened at his passing, and my thoughts go out to his family.

DeVotchKa - How It Ends

I know they have been around a while, I just discovered them via the trailer for the movie "Everything is illuminated". Since then I have been listening to the album "How it Ends" non-stop. There is not a bad track on it. Here is a live version from a concert at the Troubadour in Hollywood.

An Inconvenient Truth

Saturday I watched An Inconvenient Truth on DVD.
This is a movie, by Al Gore, that everybody in the world should see. Mankind has to help itself, because truly the "leaders" of mankind are not doing a damn thing about it. You have to reduce your own carbon footprint. Seeing what would happen to the San Francisco Bay area was scary, OK so I'm a little self centered here because I live in the bay area. But many, many places in the world would disappear if Antarctica or Greenland melts. One wonders how much of a warning we would get? Would we take notice? Can we all sit on the higher ground? There are many places to get information about this, much better informed than me. But I urge you rent or buy the DVD and watch the movie, it may be the best thing you ever do for your life. As an aside, I now believe Al Gore would have made a much better president, faint praise based on what we have. But he comes across as a real caring human being in this documentary.

Did you Notice?
If you are a guy then your probable response to that question would have been a blank look, if you are female then of course you noticed.
This is just another of the differences between the sexes, but one of the scary ones.
Scenario: You arrive home from a hard day at work or a hardly working day, open the door, walk in and your significant other says "Did you notice anything?". You look around frantically, the cat is sleeping in the same place as when you left this morning, the TV is still there in the corner, the furniture looks the same color as the last time you saw it, her hair looks the same as it was this morning. Or does it? So you try with "Your hair looks nice." Nice try! No cigar.Whatever it was you'll never get it right. Face it you are doomed, you are a guy. Guys don't notice stuff. They may notice a nice pair of headlights, or the latest new vehicle driving along the road. Hell they could take the same route to work for fourteen years and one day they might notice a new mini-mall, thay mention it in work as being new and a co-worker will inform them it's been open for two years now (a female co-worker of course).

Are you chained to your computer? Do you listen to music whilst so chained?

I don't think this ever happened before, certainly never did when I lived in the UK.
But I just saw in the Sun that there was a tornado hit London last night.
